 The Central Coast Community Women’s Health Centre is hosting a Day of Action Against Sexual Assault to be held at 2 shopping Centres, between 10am and 2pm on the 25th August 2016. The Day of Action against Sexual Assault is held on the last Thursday in August each year. The Central Coast Community Women’s Health Centre aims to be a leading voice on this issue

The event will commemorate victims of sexual assault, celebrate their survival and acknowledge the efforts and successes of people who work with those survivors. The event will have a range of services who can Inform sexual assault survivors of their options and let them know they are not alone and where to go for help and support.

Central Coast Community Women’s Health Centre, Northern co-ordinator Paula Jarman said “it is important to increase community awareness around sexual assault, discuss the impact on people’s lives, respond with compassion and let people know where to seek support when they need help”.

It is estimated that as many as 1 in 4 girls will experience some form of sexual or indecent assault some time in their lives. Females made up 83% of victims in 2014 (Australia wide), however sexual assault can also happen to boys and men resulting in further trauma stemming from the stigma and the myth that sexual assault only happens to women.

Sexual assault can happen to people from all backgrounds, cultures, people with disabilities and people in same sex relationships. However, only 17% of sexual assaults are reported to Police. There were 217 recorded incidents of sexual assaults on the Central Coast over 12 months to March 2015. .A scary statistic in itself. Iin Australia during 2014 persons aged 19 years and under accounted for 60% of all victims of sexual assault. It can have a profound impact on a person’s life, long after the assault has occurred
